Getting Started

How the platform works and what to expect

How long does it take to get proposals?

After posting a brief, our matching algorithm runs immediately. Matched developers receive invitations and typically respond within 2-3 business days. You'll have proposals to review within a week of posting.

How many proposals will I receive?

Buyers review up to 8 proposals per brief. This maintains quality and avoids overwhelming review queues. If fewer than 3 proposals arrive within 48 hours, additional developers may be invited. You can also open the brief to verified developers at any time.

What if I'm not happy with the shortlist?

You can request a re-match with adjusted criteria. Our team can also help refine your brief to attract better-suited developers. There's no charge until you enter a contract, so you can iterate on your requirements.

Can I hire multiple freelancers?

Yes. Each brief can result in one contract, but you can post multiple briefs for different aspects of your project. Many clients run parallel workstreams with different specialists—for example, one developer for frontend and another for backend.

How do I post my first brief?

After signing up as a buyer, navigate to "Post a Brief" in your dashboard. Describe your project requirements, budget range, timeline, and required skills. The more detail you provide, the better our matching system can connect you with suitable developers.

Finding & Hiring Developers

How matching and proposals work

How is Indeelancer different from Upwork, Freelancer or Fiverr?

Three key differences: (1) Curated talent—we vet developers before they can bid, not after problems arise. (2) Curated invites—you receive proposals from a shortlist of up to 8 invited developers instead of hundreds. (3) Australian focus—our developers are primarily based in Australia, with compatible timezones and communication styles for AU businesses.

Can I get more proposals if I need them faster?

Yes. You can manually expand the invite pool or open your brief to verified developers at any time. This helps prevent delays while keeping proposal quality high.

What if none of the proposals fit?

You can request a re-match with adjusted criteria, open the brief to verified developers, or work with our team to refine requirements. We don't charge until you enter a contract, so there's no penalty for refining your search.

Can I see developer ratings before hiring?

Yes, all developer profiles show their ratings broken down by skill, on-time delivery percentage, first-pass approval rate, and overall reliability score. You can see how they've performed on previous projects before making a decision. Learn more about our quality standards.

How do developers submit proposals?

Indeelancer uses a curated invite-only model. Our matching system evaluates developer skills, experience, and availability against your brief requirements. Developers can only submit proposals when they are invited through matching, or when a brief is later opened to verified developers by the buyer or the system.

Is Indeelancer only for Australian businesses?

No, but it's optimized for them. Our developer pool is primarily Australian, making timezone alignment and communication straightforward for Australian clients. International clients can use the platform, but should expect primarily AU-timezone availability.

Developer Vetting & Quality

How we verify and maintain developer quality

How do you verify developer identities?

All developers complete government ID verification through our secure verification partner. We verify that the person matches their ID, their location claims are accurate, and they have the right to work. This happens before they can submit any proposals.

How are developers vetted?

Freelancers must complete identity verification before receiving payment. Skills are verified using an evidence-based Developer Verification (DV) process, where artifacts such as git repositories, live URLs, screenshots, and case studies are reviewed against a structured rubric. DV tiers reflect the strength of submitted evidence — not certification. Ongoing platform compliance and performance monitoring, including behaviour, delivery history, and buyer feedback, ensures trust is maintained over time.

What happens if a developer's metrics drop?

Developers with declining metrics receive warnings and reduced visibility in matching. Persistent issues (on-time delivery below 70%, dispute rate above 15%, or multiple negative reviews) can result in temporary suspension or permanent removal. Read more about our dispute resolution process.

Can removed developers rejoin?

Depends on the reason for removal. Developers removed for minor performance issues can reapply after 6 months with documented evidence of improvement. Those removed for serious violations such as fraud, harassment, or repeated non-delivery are permanently banned from the platform.

How do you prevent fake ratings?

Ratings can only be submitted after milestone completion through the platform—no work delivered, no rating possible. We also monitor for suspicious patterns (rating exchanges, coordinated reviews) and investigate anomalies. Both parties must rate for project completion.

What if I disagree with a rating I received?

You can respond publicly to any rating with your perspective. For ratings that violate our guidelines (personal attacks, false claims), you can request a review. We won't remove ratings simply because they're negative, but we will remove those that are demonstrably false or inappropriate.

Payments & Milestones

How milestone payments work

How do milestone payments work?

Payments operate through secure milestone payments. Stripe processes payments and holds milestone funds until release conditions are met. Indeelancer facilitates the workflow and dispute process but does not act as an escrow or trust service. Buyers fund milestones in advance. Funds are released when milestones are approved in accordance with platform rules.

How do milestone payments protect my project?

Funds are held securely by Stripe before work begins and released only after approval or a defined review window. This protects businesses from non-delivery and developers from non-payment. Neither party can access funds without the other's approval (or dispute resolution).

Who holds my funds?

Funds are held in Stripe's secure payment infrastructure via Stripe Connect, a globally trusted payment processor. Indeelancer never has direct access to milestone funds—they're held by Stripe until release conditions are met.

When are funds released to developers?

Funds are released only after approval or a defined review window. This ensures projects don't stall while still giving buyers time to review deliverables. You can request revisions or raise a dispute within this period.

What happens if I don't review a milestone?

When a milestone is submitted, you have a defined review window to approve the work or raise any concerns. If no action is taken within this window, the milestone may be treated as approved and milestone funds may be released to the developer. The review window and reminder notifications are shown clearly in your dashboard.

Can developers access my payment before approval?

No. Milestone funds cannot be accessed by developers until you approve the milestone or the review window expires. This is enforced at the payment processor level, not just in our system.

What payment methods are supported?

We accept all major credit and debit cards, as well as bank transfers for larger projects. All payments are processed securely through Stripe with PCI-DSS Level 1 compliance, the highest security standard for payment processing. See our secure payments page for details.

Are there any hidden fees?

No hidden fees. Our platform fee is clearly displayed before you confirm any payment. The fee covers milestone payment management, payment processing, matching services, and dispute resolution. Indeelancer absorbs standard payment processing costs. GST is charged on platform fees only if/when Indeelancer is GST-registered.

Disputes & Refunds

What happens when things go wrong

What happens if there's a dispute?

We have a clear, documented dispute resolution process that reviews each case based on milestone agreements and platform messages. Both parties submit evidence, and our team reviews the case. Dispute review target: 2 business days. Complex disputes may take up to 5 business days. The dispute outcome determines milestone fund release.

What happens if a developer doesn't deliver?

If a developer fails to deliver, you can raise a dispute. Our team reviews the milestone requirements, communication history, and any partial work submitted. If the developer clearly failed to deliver, funds are returned to you. Repeated non-delivery results in developer removal from the platform.

Can I cancel a project before work starts?

Yes. If no milestones have been funded or work begun, you can cancel a contract without penalty. Simply notify the developer through the platform and close the contract. No fees apply to unfunded contracts.

What if the developer has started work but I want to cancel?

You'll need to reach agreement with the developer on any partial payment for work completed. If you can't agree, you can raise a dispute. Our team will review progress against milestones and determine fair compensation for legitimate work delivered.

How long do refunds take to process?

Once approved, refunds typically appear within 5-10 business days depending on your payment method and bank. Credit card refunds may take longer due to bank processing times. We initiate all refunds within 24 hours of approval. Visit our refunds and cancellations page for the complete policy.

Are platform fees refunded on cancellation?

Platform fees on released milestones are not refundable—that work was delivered and approved. Fees on disputed milestones are refunded if the dispute resolves in your favour. Fees on unfunded milestones don't apply. See our pricing page for the full fee structure.

What happens if I file a chargeback with my bank?

Please use our dispute process first—it's faster and preserves your ability to use the platform. Bank chargebacks take months to resolve and may result in account suspension pending investigation. We'll cooperate with your bank but strongly recommend using internal resolution first.

Trust & Safety

How we keep the platform secure

How does the rating system work?

After each milestone, both parties rate each other. Ratings are broken down by skill (for developers) and payment reliability (for buyers). Overall scores are weighted averages that account for project size and recency. New users start with no rating, not a default score.

Can developers be removed from the platform?

Yes. Developers can be removed for: sustained poor performance (low ratings, high dispute rate), policy violations (fraud, harassment, off-platform payments), or failed re-verification. We conduct quarterly reviews of all active developers against our quality standards.

What if I need to cancel a project?

You can cancel at any time, but funded milestones need resolution. For unfunded work, simply close the contract. For funded milestones, reach agreement with your developer or raise a dispute for our team to mediate.

Is my payment information secure?

Yes. We never store your full card details—all payment processing happens through Stripe, which is PCI-DSS Level 1 certified (the highest security standard). We only store the last 4 digits for your reference. Learn more on our secure payments page.

How do you handle harassment or inappropriate behaviour?

Report any inappropriate behaviour through the platform. We investigate all reports within 24 hours. Confirmed violations result in warnings, suspension, or permanent removal depending on severity. We have zero tolerance for harassment.

Pricing & Fees

Understanding our fee structure

How do you make money?

We charge a platform fee on successful contracts when milestone payments are released. Developers don't pay to bid or join the platform. This model aligns our incentives with successful project completion—we only earn revenue when work is actually delivered and approved.

When do I pay the platform fee?

The platform fee is calculated and charged when you fund each milestone. It's shown clearly before you confirm payment, so you always know the total cost upfront. The fee percentage is consistent across all project sizes, with no tiered pricing or volume surcharges.

What is the posting bond?

The $20 posting bond helps prevent spam and low-quality briefs. It is 100% refundable when you hire a developer and fund your first milestone within 7 days. If you choose not to proceed, the bond helps cover review and moderation costs.

How does GST work?

GST is charged on Indeelancer platform fees only if/when Indeelancer is GST-registered. If Indeelancer is not GST-registered, GST is not charged. Receipts are issued for platform fees paid. Developer payments are between you and the contractor—they handle their own tax obligations.

What if I need a refund?

Refunds depend on the situation: Unfunded milestones have no fees to refund. Disputed milestones may have fees refunded based on the outcome. The posting bond is refunded when you hire and fund your first milestone within 7 days. Contact support for specific situations.
